High Shear Mixers: Experimental & Production

High Shear Mixers

High shear mixers are primarily used in industry to produce standard mixtures of ingredients that do not mix naturally. When the total fluid of the material is composed of two or more liquids, after the work of the high-shear mixer, an emulsion is finally formed.

Details of High Shear Mixer

  • Suitable for the material before the process
  • Small energy consumption
  • Large capacity
  • Certain self-suction and low lift transport function

Application: Paint, Adhesive, Battery, Pharmaceutical industry, Cosmetic

To achieve standard mixing, a balanced mixing technique is used. Make the target obtain the corresponding characteristics, so that after mixing the product, the characteristics are obtained, and the characteristics will not change significantly due to the processing time. When one region of fluid travels at a different velocity than an adjacent region, the fluid is subjected to strong shear. A high shear mixer primarily “processes” a fluid using its high-speed rotating impeller or high-speed rotor, or a series of such impellers or in-line rotors, usually powered by an electric motor, to create flow and shear.

Its velocity, or the velocity of the fluid at the outer diameter of the rotor, will be higher than the velocity at the center of the rotor, and it is this difference in velocity that creates strong shear forces. High-shear mixers are mainly used for normal pressure and working conditions below 100°C. There are two versions of this type of mixer: laboratory and production.

Features of High Shear Mixer

The high-shear mixer is mainly suitable for liquid-liquid, powder-liquid dispersion, mixing, emulsification, shearing, and homogeneity of materials. It provides test plates, mobile lifting plates, and fixed plates. The high-shear siphon device can be used according to the material formula. Process requirements are configured, generally, there are crusher stators, mixing stators, and emulsification stators to choose from, to make different process requirements. The speed can also be adjusted by frequency conversion to increase or decrease the speed, but it should be matched with the corresponding frequency converter.

The high-shear mixer can disperse, emulsify, homogenize, pulverize, and mix the material through high-speed cutting and collision. The high-shear mixer can obtain stable high-quality products. The laboratory high-shear emulsifier has a variety of agitators, which are suitable for Due to the different processing capabilities and different experimental requirements, it is easy to operate, easy to clean, and easy to maintain.

High Shear Mixer

High-shear mixers are available with stator/rotor heads of different designs. When in operation, this stator/rotor head can draw solids and liquids around it into the midpoint and push them radially back to the tank through the stator openings. During this time, solids and liquids are subjected to intense grinding and shearing, deagglomerating, homogenizing, and dispersing each other even if they cannot be mixed by conventional agitation.

Immersing the mixer in the liquid, the high-shear mixer can be installed in a variety of ways, it can be lifted by a hydraulic or electric stand, or it can be flange mounted directly on the top, side, or bottom of the tank.

For vacuum or pressurized tanks, the agitator needs to be equipped with a mechanical shaft seal. These mixers are used in open vessels, i.e. atmospheric pressure vessels. They are top entry mixers that can be mounted on a lift frame or mounted directly to a vessel via a flange or a beam. A coupling between the motor and the shaft is optional for low noise and stable operation.

How High-Shear Mixers Work

The working head of the high-shear mixer is mainly mixed in three stages. During the homogenization process, an abnormally high shear rate is generated; the material is sucked into the working head through a high-speed rotor, and intensively mixed and emulsified in it. Centrifugal force drives materials to the periphery of the work head and subjects them to mechanical shear in the precise gap between the rotor and stator. This is followed by intense hydraulic shearing where the material is forced through the stator screen at high speed and back into the mixture. Fresh material is continuously sucked into the working head, gradually reducing the spherical or particle size, at a uniform speed, resulting in a uniform product.

The mixing head of a high-shear mixer consists of a rotor surrounded by a freely rotating stator. The rotor draws material into the stator, and the high shear between the high-speed rotor blades and the slowly rotating stator rim subjects the material to productive milling and grinding before being expelled at high speed through outlets in the stator rim.

When passing through these outlets, the particles, agglomerates, solids, etc. of the emulsifier undergo strong cutting and disintegration to further reduce the particle size. During this process, many of the contents of the container will pass through the mixing head of the emulsifier multiple times to obtain a homogeneous product.
