Grinding media for sand mills

Sand Mill

Sand mill is a kind of high-efficiency grinding equipment, which is mainly used for grinding materials, and the particle size of the final grinding can reach the nanometer level.

Application: Paint, Adhesive, Battery, Pharmaceutical industry, Cosmetic

Sand mills can be used to grind various wet materials to the desired state, and can also be used to mix and disperse materials. In the grinding process, the sand mill can form a uniform mixture of various components, which has been well-received by various industries. At present, the application of sand mills has been widely involved in various fields, such as paint, ink, medicine, food, cosmetics, etc., it has the characteristics of high productivity, high grinding fineness, safety and reliability, and low cost.

The sand mill is equipped with an agitator, mainly to agitate the grinding medium in the grinding process. Commonly used grinding media are generally divided into glass beads, zirconia beads, etc. Different sand mills produce different grinding effects, because one mill may produce tiny fine particles. The bead grinding medium of the sand mill should be truly spherical, with narrow particle size distribution and low price. In addition, three main factors should be considered: Particle size, density, and chemical composition.

Particle size

The outlet of the sand mill is provided with a screen, the dispersed mud passes through the screen, and the sanding medium must be retained. Therefore, the diameter of the beads must be larger than the diameter of the mesh. Experience has shown that the diameter of the grinding balls must be at least half larger than the larger diameter of the screen openings, otherwise, the screen will often clog. Since the grinding beads are inevitably worn during the grinding process, the diameter of the grinding beads selected should also be appropriately increased.

Try to use a smaller bead without clogging the mesh as it provides more points of contact for grinding, that is, as long as the bead provides, the pigment will disperse.

For our commonly used vertical sand mill, the density of the dispersed beads, the tendency of the beads to sink to the bottom of the sand mill, and the tendency to agglomerate at the bottom of the sand mill are less, the wear of the beads and the severity of the wear of the sand mill is also small, but the dispersing force it can generate is also small.

Therefore, for easy-to-disperse pigments and pigments with small agglomerates, beads with relatively small densities can be used. For difficult-to-disperse pigments and pigments with coarse agglomerates, they should be used as high-density beads. The viscosity of the pigment paste should be slightly higher to reduce the impact of the deposition environment of the beads on the dispersion management of the enterprise.

Chemical composition

During normal grinding, all dispersed beads, regardless of their grade, should not be damaged by various stresses. Broken beads in the slurry only indicate that the grinder itself is damaged or broken. For example, when the impeller disc wears down to form deep grooves, beads can sometimes get caught in the grooves and break.

For the main production of latex paint, the commonly used grinding beads in grinding are zirconia beads, which are relatively hard and wear-resistant, and will not affect the wear caused by excessive use of the sand mill. High-strength zirconia beads also show a medium well-worn.

Influence of grinding media shape and size on grinding effect

The shapes of grinding media are mainly spherical, columnar, and irregular. In industry, irregular media tend to develop and be affected by their wear and tear, which can cause significant pollution. Therefore, in the actual teaching application research, spherical media are mostly used, and cylindrical media also have some applications. Without planning working media, they can be used less.

The size of the grinding media ball directly affects the grinding effect and product fineness and determines the number of contact points between the grinding media and the material. Under the same volume, the more contact points of the small particle size grinding media balls, the higher the crushing efficiency in theory. The size of the medium particle size depends on the material particle size and the desired product particle size. The finer the product particle size, the smaller the medium particle size. If the particle size of the feed is relatively large, the impact of the grinding medium on the pulverization is required to be relatively large, then the distribution of the balls should be relatively large.

Influence of gradation of grinding media on the effect of pulverization

When the total mass of the grinding medium is the same, different grinding medium ratios have different effects on the grinding effect. Generally speaking, the particle size distribution of the medium has a certain regularity in the continuous grinding process. To reduce costs, the method of supplementing large balls is used to restore the grinding capacity of the system, making it difficult for the mill to maintain a constant media ratio during long-term operation. If the diameter of the medium is too large, it will increase the ineffective grinding, that is, the large medium grinds the small-medium, which increases the grinding cost.

Taking a sand mill as an example, the material properties, particle size, and other factors of the sand mill can be used to select the appropriate size of the grinding medium by calculating the appropriate impact force, so that the grinding medium can not only have sufficient destructive force on the impact of large particle materials but also prevent the material from being overly crushed. As grinding progresses, the particle size decreases, and the crushing force required to break the particles also changes. When the particle size reaches a certain fineness range, due to the reduction of its crushing resistance, the corresponding crushing method will gradually change from throwing to grinding. Therefore, to make the grinding media ball of the grinding equipment meet the requirements of impact and grinding, it is necessary to carry out “Classification” And mix grinding media of different particle sizes to achieve the grinding effect.

Guidelines For Sand Mill

The sand mill mainly uses friction, shearing, and collision as effective grinding methods. It is one of the grinding equipment currently applicable to a wide range of material particle sizes and has high grinding efficiency. The energy density per unit volume is large. The control system can complete the continuous grinding and continuous discharging of the slurry, which greatly improves the production efficiency of the sand mill. It has the advantages of high energy density, fine product granularity, small environmental pollution, simple equipment structure, and convenient maintenance.
